My name is Anne Merrild Hansen, I come from South Greenland. I was originally born in Denmark but moved to Greenland when I was seven years old. I grew up with my father from Denmark and my stepmother who is Kalaaleq (Inuk) from Greenland. I have four younger siblings.

I have a Master Degree in engineering and did my PhD on strategic environmental assessment. I have worked for a Municipality in Greenland and for Maersk Oil and Gas. Today I reside in Aalborg, Denmark. I am employed as a Professor at Aalborg University and I lead a cross faculty research-platform called AAU Arctic. I am also the head of the PhD School at Ilisimatusarfik, University of Greenland .

My research is focused on impact assessments in the Arctic and I am particularly interested in the impacts on and benefits for communities related to large-scale industrial development. I work with sectors such as oil, mining and fisheries. I am also engaged in developing impact assessment methodologies and theory.

An increased level of industrial activity in Greenland and related transformation processes in impacted communities sparked my interest for this field of research. While industry can move on if a project goes wrong, people residing in the area has to live with the consequences. It is therefore of greatest importance to plan carefully to secure sustainable development in the Arctic communities when new industries are developed.

I supervise PhD students who work on topics related to my own research or in other ways related to sustainable development in the Arctic. In my job as the head of the PhD School in Greenland my aim is to strengthen collaboration with partners in the Arctic and to increase the number of phd students.
